Registration still is open for the 23rd National Veterans Golden Age Games, sponsored by the VA, Veterans Canteen Service and Help Hospitalized Veterans. All registration packages must be received no later than March 31, 2009.
More than 700 veterans from across the country will travel to the host city of Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the largest sports and recreation competition for senior military veterans in the world. The event is scheduled for June 1-5, using area venues in the Birmingham area and is hosted by the Birmingham VA Medical Center.
At the Golden Age Games, competition is open to all U.S. military veterans age 55 or older who receive care at any VA medical facility. Participants will compete in ambulatory, visually-impaired, and wheelchair divisions, based on age, and in certain competitions, in gender groups. Events include swimming, bicycling, bowling, croquet, air rifle, golf, shuffleboard, horseshoes, discus and shot-put, among others.
The National Veterans Golden Age Games is the only national multi-event sports and recreational seniors’ competition program for older veterans. It is designed to improve the quality of life for all older veterans, including those with a wide range of abilities.
