Now We Have the Air Force View

Now we have the Air Force view. We’ve gone from a $12 a night view of the Fiddler’s Cove Marina and San Diego to a $15 a night view of the Thunderbirds performing. Not bad. We came down to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas to spend Sam’s birthday in a city (he just turned 8). Fortunately for us, we picked a week to spend at Nellis when the Thunderbirds were finishing up their season. They’ve been flying over the base showing off their skills this week. As far as Sam is concerned, the show was put on for his 8th birthday.

For Sam’s big present, we took him and his siblings to the Rick Thomas Magic show at the Sahara on the strip: magic, swords being stuck into women, tigers, and watching his dad being called on stage to strap a women onto a platform so she can disappear: priceless. Next up will be scrambling over the rocks at Red Rock Canyon.

Nellis was our first assignment after Mary Claire and I married. Events like the above sometimes make us nostalgic for Vegas, but then we drive in the traffic, see the pollution hanging over the city, and read about the crime. Time to move on.

    Hello Wahl Family,

I have been wanting to drop you all a line to tell you we are also on a US road trip. We left our home in Albuquerque on July 20, 2009 for a 375 day trip. I retired in February from 25 years of air traffic control and wanted to spend the first year traveling. We too have three children with us, ages 16, 13 and 8 and we home school. Although we love Albuquerque we are also making lists of the places we have liked the best to seriously consider moving when our trip is over. We are, though, on a specific route I planned before we left that has us visiting all 50 state capitols as well as many other places. I’ve included our blog spot address above where you can see what we’ve done so far. On an October 30 entry I included our route as planned and a route of what we’ve done so far. I heard about your trip when my brother gave me a copy, in September, of the article in the USA Today paper about you all. It was encouraging to know others are doing what we’re doing although I guess I should have realized we weren’t the only ones. As I have been reading through your blogs the last few days I’ve been laughing at how many experiences we’ve had that you’ve described like: Crossing the Canadian border, purchasing our RV this past June, shortage of space, ETC. The one that made me finally email you is your Dec 2008 entry about your Disney World stay. We are currently trying to decide if we should do that or not. We have reservations at the Fort Wilderness Campgrounds Dec 14-19 and I think we are now going to do it for sure based on your experience. We would love to hear from you and maybe sometime this next year we’ll cross paths. Kevin D.

Happy birthday to Sam! Wow your baby is eight.
I told Mike I could live in Las Vegas and he said no way! I would at least like to go back and visit. Maybe some long weekend I will go that would be fun.
I also believe the Thunderbirds knew it was Sam’s birthday so they were putting on the show just for him.
