Air purifiers for large homes have to have high airflow and large filters to remove dust, smoke, odors and other airborne contaminants effectively and in a reasonable amount of time. And not every air cleaner can fulfill this requirement.

However, there are a few excellent air cleaners that can trap viruses, germs, smells and other particulate matter from large spaces, including homes. Down below I have selected the best ones that I personally recommend if you want to breathe cleaner air inside your house.

Note: air purifiers reviewed on this page are ready to use from a box and are to be put on a floor as portable air purifiers. If you are interested in a whole house air purifier that has to be installed in an existing HVAC system of your house check this page.

Airdog X8 is the leading air purifier in the Airdog family of air cleaners and it is priced accordingly. However, the 4-stage air cleaning system makes up for the seemingly high retail price and in the long run it will pay off in full. So let’s take a closer look at how this air purifier cleans the air in large spaces.

The first level of the cleaning process is getting done by the Pre-filter. Polluted air is screened as it passes through the pre-filter, which catches big particles of pollutants like hair and cat or dog dander. It is both permanent and washable – doesn’t require a replacement at all.

The next step is the Ionizer. It is the primary technique of filtration that also creates an ionic field on the surface of the generator wires (also known as emitter wires). Even ultra-fine particles as small as 0.0146 microns, such as bacteria, germs, and viruses, can be destroyed by it. Pet dander, pollen, dust, and other particles larger than 0.3 microns are also effectively removed by it.

Next is the collecting plate that gathers the dangerous particles inside even though it is not a layer of protection. You won’t need to buy costly new filters if you use these sturdy but dishwasher-safe plates. The collecting plate is washable.

The last line of defense from airborne irritants is the Composite Catalyst. This  filter is actually an Activated Carbon filter that gets rid of chemicals, smells and smoke. It also filters out any ozone particles that might be generated by the ionizer. This filter doesn’t require a replacement as well.

The Airdog X8 is also one of those high-end air purifiers that have Wi-Fi and Smart Sensor functionality. The Auto mode simply adjusts its speed following the air quality in the surrounding area: if it’s good the speed is lowered and if the air is heavily polluted the speed goes up. The air quality index is reported by Airdog X8 in both color and numeric formats.

I had no trouble getting my Airdog unit to connect to Wi-Fi – that’s a thing that many air cleaners fail to do. Additionally, you can operate the air purifier with the remote control.

In the end, the Airdog X8 protects household inhabitants from allergens, viruses, bacteria, germs, chemicals, dust and odors in large rooms and homes. It also saves up a lot of money in the long run, as you’d spend only $70 on electricity bills per year.

Smart Health Blast air purifier is the one you must have if chemicals, fumes, odors and VOCs are your primary reasons to get yourself an air purifier for the house. Whether it’s formaldehyde, radon, nitrogen oxides and other harmful gases and emissions – they all will get lost inside the large and high-quality filters utilized by this air cleaner.

The air purifier uses 2 filters to remove air pollution: HEPA and Carbon. The first one can catch particles as small as 0.3 micron at 99.97% efficiency, effectively cleaning the air from the tiniest particulate matter. It lasts up to 22 months on average before it has to be replaced with a new filter.

The Carbon filter is designed to trap gases and VOCs and it has an average lifetime of 18 months. It is slightly cheaper compared to the HEPA filter.

Another thing that makes this air cleaner stand out among many other is the extremely high airflow the fan can generate to circulate and clean the air inside a house. The Smart Health Blast at the maximum speed moves a whopping 1360 cubic feet of air, making it one of the highest CADR-rated air purifiers on the market today. It can easily clean an area of 2,500 sq. ft. 4 times per hour or an area of 5,000 sq. ft. twice an hour!

So if you have a large house and want to keep the air clean 100% of the time, this air purifier will do the trick.

The USA-made Tracs TM250 is not as powerful as previously reviewed air purifiers, however, there are a few reasons why I consider it one of the best air purifiers today.

First of all, it employs a medical-grade HEPA H13 filter. Such filters are used in hospitals, laboratories and other institutions where high air quality is a must. The filter used by the Tracs TM250 can remove virtually all airborne pollution, including heavy smoke and keep the air clean from all impurities.

Secondly, the unit and the filter are made in the US. It means it is built to last for decades – people I know use this air purifier for at least 15 years and it is still running without a problem. They just replace filters (HEPA and pre-filter) and UV-C lamps. The manufacturer provides a 5-year warranty on the unit and the HEPA filter can last up to 5 years maximum (3 on average).

Lastly, this air purifier employs the aforementioned UV-C bulbs to treat viruses, mold and germs. Ultraviolet Germicidal irradiation is proven to be very effective , inactivating many of them and preventing the spread of diseases. The Tracs lamps are 254nm, meaning they do not release ozone and are completely safe for humans and pets.

It is best to put the Tracs TM250 in your living room and let it run 24/7; from time to time you can move it to another room to clean air there from any airborne pollution as well.

Blueair XL Pro is an AHAM-Verified air purifier that is recommended to use in 930 square feet areas whereas the Blueair company recommends using it in a 1180 sq. ft. room. Whenever is more accurate (both numbers are very close to 1,000 sq. ft. anyway), one thing is certain: this machine can remove dust and smoke as quickly as possible due to its high airflow and the large HEPA filters that measure 13.7″ x 8″ x 2.5″ each.

Compared to any other air purifier reviewed here, the Blueair XL Pro uses not just one but 3 HEPA filters. It means, the chances of any tiny particle getting caught is multiplied by three! This is especially important when you have to deal with heavy odors, such as cigarette or wildfire smoke.

Fine particles of construction dust, atmospheric dust and others are also easily caught with the help of 3 HEPA filters and its high AHAM-certified Clean Air Delivery Rate.

This air purifier also features an Auto mode that is known for its accuracy. Whenever the smallest particle of dust, odor or smoke is discovered by the sensor, it immediately increases the fan speed to catch it as quickly as possible.

What I dislike about the XL Pro is the lack of casters. Hopefully, soon Blueair will release a new model that will feature them.

Purafil Purashield Smart is the best air purifier when it comes to treating viruses, germs and bacteria in homes up to 1500 square feet. The air cleaner has all the necessary instruments to remove airborne contaminants from the air: high CADR, large and good filters and good design to maximize the airflow.

The unit employs a 4-stage air filtration process with a help of 3 filters (pre-filter, antimicrobial filter and HEPA) and oxidation. The system has been tested to remove viruses that cause epidemics – H1N1, H7N9, SARS and many others. Bacteria like Staphylococcus Albus, S. aureus, E. Coli, and C. Albicans are also removed from the air completely.

The unit also constantly monitors the air quality inside the house and all data is shown on the LCD display. And when any air filter is worn out you also get a notification.

The only downside of this excellent air purifier is its price. The price tag of $5,000 might not be for everyone to bear.
