Whenever you rent a condo, there is a chance of air pollution, especially in large cities or if your place of residence is located close to a highway. Or you like pets but cannot get one because of your allergies? Or maybe you have neighbors in your condo who smoke every day and you have to deal with it daily? And living in post-Covid times only increases the chances of getting a virus.
Whatever the case, a properly designed and manufactured air purifier can deal will all these sorts of airborne contaminants, whether it’s general air pollution, bacteria, viruses, allergens or smells.
Many air cleaners do a good job of removing various particles, but not all of them are portable and affordable. So I have decided to post a list of the 3 best air purifiers I recommend buying for your condo this year. Check them down below!

The popular Winix PlasmaWave 5500-2 is your best option when looking for a condo air purifier. It uses a true HEPA air filter to remove fine particles of smoke, dust, bacteria and viruses. A washable pre-filter easily captures pet hair and dander while an Activated Carbon filter traps odors from your kitchen or bathroom. An in-built optional ionizer also helps 3 filters to catch more pollutants in a shorter period of time.
This air purifier has gone through an independent AHAM-test and was verified to remove dust, pollen and smoke in rooms up to 360 sq. ft. It’s one of the best air purifiers when it comes to CADR/price ratio – for sure, you can get even a better unit, but you’d have to pay far more money.
Apart from excellent cleaning capabilities, the Winix comes with 2 smart functions – Auto and Sleep modes. The Auto removes the necessity of manually changing the settings each time as it is perfectly capable of automatically adjusting the speed (ramping up or decreasing it) whenever necessary. The unit turns on the Sleep mode when it’s too dark saving the electricity and reducing noise to a whisper quiet sound.
The Winix company has been present on the market of air purifiers for decades now. Their appliances are reliable and the company offers a 2-year warranty on this air cleaner.
Overall, the Winix PlasmaWave 5500-2 is your #1 choice for a condo air purifier this year.

Medify Air MA-112 is another popular air purifier for condos. It comes with a higher price tag but the price difference is understandable – this unit features larger filters and higher airflow compared to the previously reviewed Winix. All in all, it’s simply better and designed for large rooms and bigger areas.
The MA-112 can clean an area of 1050 sq. ft. delivering 4.8 air changes per hour. 4.8 ACH is a standard for keeping the air clean from allergens like dander, pollen and many others. Not many air purifiers can perform so well in 1000 sq. ft. spaces.
The maximum coverage for the unit is 2500 square feet – at area that big the MA-112 delivers 2 air changes per hour.
The unit features a 0-8hr timer, Child Lock and a filter indicator that shines red when the HEPA filter has to be replaced. On average this happens every 4 months.
If you are living in a large condo and want to buy a unit that cleans the air from smoke, allergens, germs, mold and viruses – the Medify MA-112 is the best you can wish for. The company also offers air cleaners for smaller condos, check them out here.
The only downside this model has is high sound levels peaking at 70 decibels. However, after you’ve got the unit and run it for an hour or so at the 4th speed, you should select the lowest or the second speed – this way the air purifier won’t bother you with the sound and will keep the air clean at the same time.

Afloia Kilo Pro is the best humidifier and air purifier combo for any condo. Despite its small size and low price, it features a HEPA H13 air filter that is capable of removing airborne irritants, including smoke, dust and allergens while consuming only 23 Watts of power.
The humidifier has a 1.9L water tank capacity and can keep the humidity levels for 10 hours straight before you have to refill the tank. It can be used in a combination with the Afloia purifier, so the air will get cleaned and humidified at the same time. The humidifier section is detachable from the main body.
The unit also features a simple 2,4 and 8 hours timer and a remote.
You can buy either one unit for your small condo to place in a living room or bedroom, or get yourself 2 or more air purifiers so they will clean and humidify the air in all rooms.
In case you need to dehumidify the air, I recommend getting the Q10 model from the same manufacturer. It covers the same area and is the best budget air purifier & dehumidifier for anyone’s needs.
FAQ
What is the best air purifier for a condo?
It all depends on your needs (allergy, dust, smoke, viruses) and the size of your condo. But to make it easier for you to decide here’s my choice:
- Large condo: The Medify Air MA-112
- Medium-sized condo: The Winix PlasmaWave 5500-2
- Small condo: The Afloia Kilo Pro
Can you leave the air purifier on all the time?
Yes, you can do it! There are no limits on how long an air purifier shall stay on. If you require permanent protection against viruses, bacteria or allergens, you let it run 24/7 having to stop it only to replace the old filter.
Do air purifiers increase electric bills?
Air purifiers increase electric bills, but the difference isn’t that much. For example, the most electricity-consuming air purifier – Medify Air MA-112 – uses only 90 Watts at the maximum speed. It will increase your bill only by up to 50 dollars if you’re going to use it 12 hours per day at its maximum capabilities. The exact increase depends on the state and condo you’re staying in. Check this electricity consumption calculator with the table of electricity rates in the US.
