Stale air is one of the hardest to clean when compared to other odors (food or toilet). I assure you, a $100 conventional air purifier won’t help at all and will leave you disappointed.
However, there are air cleaning devices that can remove stale air from your house or building. Here they are:
Ozone generators. They produce ozone that destroys odor cells and makes the air fresher. The cheapest one is below $100 – works great for areas of 2,000 square feet. However, a space must be unoccupied whilst an ozone generator is working. You may only enter the area after 30 minutes have passed since the unit stopped cleaning the air inside the area.
HEPA air scrubbers are designed to remove heavily polluted air inside any building. Price varies, but you can get a decent one for $400-500 relatively easy. Air scrubbers with HEPA filters remove all particles down to 0.3 micron at 99.97% efficiency.
Lastly, Airpura makes reliable and sturdy air purifiers. Their F600 (covers more than 1,000 sq. ft.) or P700 (over 1200 sq. ft.) are equipped with a large HEPA filter and Carbon filter that effectively remove both smells and germs. However, these units are pricey compared to an average ozone generator or air scrubber.
