Himox has a few air purifiers for different rooms and today I’m going to review one of them – the Himox H05 smart and portable air purifier for large rooms. Can it really cover the whole space of 1560 sq. ft. or is it just a marketing trick?

In this review I’m going to cover this and other questions regarding the Himox air purifier.

Review

The Himox H05 air purifier is available in two colors: white and black. I prefer white as it fits my apartment coloring.

The unit’s design is nothing out of extraordinary: the front panel has HIMOX title on it, the control panel and air exhaust are located at the top and at the air intake located at the rear. So if you are about to get this portable air purifier, make sure you leave some space between it and your walls.

Filtration system installed in the Himox is also standard. It employs a combination of 3 filters:

  • Pre-filter, to trap larger particles like hair and pet dander, and some dust particles as well
  • True HEPA H13 medical-grade filter for particles treatment down to 0.3 micron. These particles include dust, asbestos, bacteria, allergens, smoke and others
  • Activated carbon filter to help capture various household odors like poop or urine, diapers, pet, kitchen smells, etc.

The filter is all right, not as large as in air purifiers for 500 sq. ft., but at the same time it’s quite good for 300 – 400 square feet rooms.

The Himox air purifier can be controlled both ways, either with physical buttons on the top control panel or with an app, or with voice and Alexa / Google Assistant. What I like about this air cleaner, is that you can use it without even touching app or anything like that as every feature can be controlled with the top panel controls.

The controls include (from left to right):

  • Timer (1H, 2H, 4, 8H)
  • Child Lock On/Off
  • Power On/Off
  • Filter Reset Button
  • Speed Button: Sleep mode (lowest setting, lowest sound), Medium speed, Maximum Speed, Auto (in this mode air purifier adjust its speed automatically)

The air purifier is also has an air quality indicator: red means the poorest air quality whilst blue means the best.

Suitable Room Size for Himox Air Purifier

The Himox air purifier is capable of achieving 250 CFM of airflow at maximum speed. Here’s table which presents how fast it can clean air in a selected area:

Room size How long it takes to clean room ACH (What’s that?)
234 sq. ft. 8 minutes 8
310 sq. ft. 10 minutes 6
390 sq. ft. 12 minutes 4.8
470 sq. ft. 15 minutes 4
620 sq. ft. 20 minutes 3
920 sq. ft. 30 minutes 2

Mind you, the minimum air changes per hour (ACH) you should look at must be two. For allergy sufferers and people who have breathing condition, the minimum required ACH is 4, preferable 4.8 and higher.

Maintenance Costs

Replacement Filters: ~$40 every 3 – 6 months for a replacement filter (check availability).

Electricity Costs: ~$3,5 per month running 12 hours per day on maximum speed. Use our Energy Consumption Calculator to estimate electricity usage and costs of the air purifier based on your local electricity rates.

Total Yearly Costs: ~$120 (replacing filter every 6th month) or $200 (replacing every 3rd month)

Pros & Cons

The Good
  • Does its job
  • Good for 300-400 sq. ft. rooms even for people with allergies
The Bad
  • Replacing the filters is costly in the long term

FAQs

How do I reset the filter on the Himox air purifier?

Press and hold the reset button for a few seconds.

What red light means?

It means bad air quality. Select maximum speed and let the air purifier run until air quality indicator changes its color to blue.

Does it releases ozone?

No! The Himox is absolutely ozone-free!

Wrapping Up

So, is Himox air purifier worth it? In my opinion, it’s totally worth it. Room coverage is reasonable for the price, air filtration system is also decent and reliable. Operating costs may seem quite high, but it’s not an unusual situation when it comes to HEPA air purifiers, when the initial costs are quickly overcome by operating ones. If you don’t want to spend money on filters, then check out Airdog air purifiers, but the initial costs would be higher in this case.

Let’s not forget about the smart functions. For example, the Honeywell HPA300 offers similar performance, but it doesn’t have app support. It’s also louder and more energy consuming air purifier.

If you want to have an air purifier that has an increased treatment for viruses and bacteria, take a look at the AirHealth Skye. It offers a great performance in combination with tons of smart functions and speed settings.

But as I’ve said earlier, the Himox air purifier is worth its price. If you have a budget of about $200 then it’s not going to be a mistake investing in this air cleaner. If you need an air purifier for 1500 sq. ft. area, then you have to invest way more money into getting your indoor air clean.

  1. We have the himox 05 air purifer. It worked for about a month and half and now the green led light isn’t working. We’ve tried to contact company and they don’t return emails. We think the green led light burned out. This is the second one we’ve got from Amazon and they’ve both done the same thing. Have you heard of anyone having this problem? We are at the point that we are going to send it back and get a refund. It’s been quite frustrating. Thanks.
